A humectant is an ingredient that attracts water and holds it in the outer skin.

What it means

Glycerin, hyaluronic acid and sodium PCA are common humectants. They draw water from the air and from deeper skin. In very dry air a humectant can pull water from the skin, so they work best combined with an occlusive or emollient.
