Emollient

An emollient softens skin by filling the gaps between skin cells with lipids (fats), which smooths the surface and makes it more flexible.

What it means

Squalane, shea butter and fatty alcohols are common emollients. They improve the feel of dry skin, and many also reduce how much water escapes from the surface.

Emollients are usually paired with humectants, which draw water in, and occlusives, which slow water loss.

Also known as

  • emollients
  • moisturiser ingredient
