Occlusive

An occlusive forms a film on the skin that slows water loss from it.

What it means

Petrolatum (petroleum jelly), dimethicone and lanolin are common occlusives. They are effective at reducing transepidermal water loss, the water that evaporates through the skin.

Occlusives do not add water themselves, which is why they are usually applied over a humectant.
