Glycerin

Glycerin is a simple, colourless humectant that draws water into the outer skin and is one of the most widely used moisturising ingredients.

What it means

It is well studied for hydration, and it is inexpensive and gentle, which is why it appears in many formulas, including the water-based base of many masks and serums.

Glycerin works best in humid conditions. In very dry air it can pull water from deeper skin, so it is usually combined with an occlusive or emollient.
