Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule found naturally in skin that binds many times its own weight in water, and it is widely used in skincare as a humectant.

What it means

Skincare products often use sodium hyaluronate, a salt of the molecule, in different molecular weights. Smaller molecules are thought to reach slightly deeper layers, though how much they penetrate is still debated.

Hyaluronic acid is best studied for hydration. Small trials report better hydration and, in some, smaller wrinkle depth, but these are short studies.
