Skin barrier

The skin barrier is the outermost layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum, which keeps water in and irritants out.

What it means

The stratum corneum is made of dead skin cells set in a lipid mix of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids, often described as bricks and mortar. Over-exfoliation, harsh cleansers, cold and sun can damage it, leaving skin dry, red and reactive.

Repair focuses on replacing the missing lipids and reducing irritation while the barrier recovers.
