Transepidermal water loss (TEWL)

Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) is the amount of water that passes through the skin and evaporates into the air.

What it means

It is measured with an instrument held on the skin, and it is used as a marker of barrier function: higher TEWL usually means a weaker barrier.

Occlusives and humectants reduce water loss in different ways, and TEWL is often used in trials of moisturisers and eczema treatments.

  • trans-epidermal water loss
