Ceramide

Ceramides are waxy lipid molecules that make up a large share of the skin barrier, helping skin cells stick together and keeping water in.

What it means

Ceramides sit between skin cells in the outer layer, the stratum corneum, alongside cholesterol and fatty acids. Levels tend to fall with age and in dry or eczema-prone skin.

Topical ceramide products are studied for barrier repair. Oral ceramide supplements have far fewer controlled trials, so the evidence for them is weaker.
