AHAs and BHAs

AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) and BHAs (beta hydroxy acids) are exfoliating acids that loosen the top layer of dead skin cells and smooth the surface.

What it means

Glycolic and lactic acids are the common AHAs. Salicylic acid is the main BHA; it is oil-soluble, so it can enter pores. Low strengths used regularly can improve texture, while higher strengths can cause stinging, redness and sun sensitivity.

Frequent exfoliation can weaken the skin barrier if it is overdone. Our book Peeling Away Youth looks at how acid exfoliation can accelerate skin aging and what to do instead.
