Vitamin C (topical)

Topical vitamin C, usually as ascorbic acid or a stable derivative, is an antioxidant used in serums to support collagen and protect against UV-related oxidative damage.

What it means

Ascorbic acid is unstable and needs a low pH to penetrate well, so formulation decides how much of the vitamin reaches the skin. Derivatives are more stable but are studied less.

Vitamin C is most useful alongside sunscreen rather than in place of it.

Also known as

  • ascorbic acid
  • L-ascorbic acid
  • vitamin C serum
  • ascorbyl derivatives
