Topical antioxidant

A topical antioxidant is an ingredient applied to the skin that neutralizes reactive oxygen molecules, which build up from sun exposure and pollution.

What it means

Common examples are vitamin C and its derivatives, vitamin E, niacinamide and green tea polyphenols. Antioxidants work best alongside sun protection, because they cannot undo all of the damage UV light causes.

Stability is a practical problem: many antioxidants break down in air and light, so packaging and formulation matter as much as the ingredient list.
