Retinoid

Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives, such as retinol and prescription tretinoin, that speed up skin cell turnover and are among the best-studied anti-aging topicals.

What it means

Prescription tretinoin is supported by many controlled trials for wrinkles and acne. Over-the-counter retinol is weaker, because the skin must convert it to the active form first.

Retinoids can cause dryness, redness and sun sensitivity, so start slowly and use daytime sun protection. Ask a clinician before using retinoids during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
