Hydrolyzed collagen

Hydrolyzed collagen is collagen broken down into smaller peptide fragments, which are used in skincare to help skin hold moisture.

What it means

Whole collagen molecules are too large to enter the skin in any meaningful amount, so skincare uses hydrolyzed forms. Topical collagen mainly works as a film and humectant on the surface.

Several small trials of oral collagen peptides report better skin hydration and elasticity. Many were funded by supplement makers, so they are worth reading with that in mind.
