Surrogate endpoint

A surrogate endpoint is a measurable marker, such as a blood level or a telomere length, used in place of an outcome people care about, such as disease or survival.

What it means

Surrogates are useful, but a change in a marker does not always translate into a change people feel or into lower disease risk. Telomere length, for example, is a marker, and a rise in it does not on its own show that a supplement extends life.

Clinical endpoints, such as vision, symptoms or survival, carry more weight.
