Randomized controlled trial (RCT)

A randomized controlled trial (RCT) assigns people by chance to a treatment group or a comparison group. It is the strongest design for testing whether something causes an effect.

What it means

Random assignment balances known and unknown differences between the groups, so any difference in outcome is more likely to come from the treatment.

Quality depends on sample size, how long the study ran, how outcomes were measured and whether it was blinded. Many skincare and supplement studies are small RCTs, so one trial rarely settles a question.
