Animal study

An animal study tests a treatment in living animals, usually mice or rats, to see effects that cell cultures cannot show.

What it means

Animal work is an important step before human trials, but results often do not transfer. Doses, ages and disease models differ, and many promising compounds fail in people.

Headlines that begin “in mice” describe early research. They are a reason to look for human trials, not a verdict.
