Sham control

A sham control is a fake procedure, such as a device that is switched off or a mock treatment, used when a placebo pill is not possible.

What it means

Device and procedure trials use sham controls: the participant undergoes something that looks identical but delivers no active treatment. Light-therapy trials use them for this reason.

When you read a device trial, check whether the sham was convincing and whether participants could tell which they had.
