Systematic review

A systematic review gathers all the studies on a question using a pre-set search and inclusion rules, then summarizes what they show.

What it means

Its strength is transparency: the search, selection and quality checks are reported so that others can repeat them. A systematic review is only as good as the studies it includes, so a review of small, weak trials can still be weak.

Look for a stated protocol, such as registration on PROSPERO, and for a note on study quality.
