Observational study

An observational study records what people do or have and looks for links between them, without assigning a treatment.

What it means

Cohort and case-control studies are common in nutrition and aging research. They can suggest links but cannot prove cause, because people who take a supplement often differ in other ways, a problem called confounding.

Much nutrition research is observational, so headlines about foods and health usually need a trial to back them up.
