AMPK

AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) is a cell energy sensor that switches on energy production and slows energy-using processes when cell energy runs low.

What it means

Exercise, fasting and calorie restriction all activate AMPK. Some compounds, including metformin and berberine, are thought to act partly through it.

Constant activation is not automatically beneficial, and the effects of drugs and supplements on AMPK in people are still being mapped.
