What is Carnosine?
Carnosine is a dipeptide made of beta-alanine and histidine. It occurs naturally in muscle and brain tissue. In skincare it is sold as L-carnosine and in modified forms such as decarboxy carnosine.
Several studies from 2023 to 2026 test carnosine inside liposomes or as self-assembled structures, to help it reach the skin.
How it is thought to work
Lab studies link carnosine to two processes: reducing oxidative stress, and blocking glycation, the reaction between sugars and proteins that stiffens collagen over time.
A 2024 study of a self-assembled carnosine structure reported lower advanced glycation end products in vivo, and whitening effects in cells. Its abstract mentions clinical efficacy tests but does not give their details.
What the studies show
Every record below was checked against the paper. Where a result is from cells, animals or a combination product, the entry says so.

Design. Cell models, molecular dynamics simulations and mouse experiments on a self-assembled carnosine structure. The abstract also mentions clinical efficacy tests without giving details.
Finding. Authors report stronger interaction with skin than plain L-carnosine, lower glycation receptor and product levels, and whitening effects in cells. The abstract gives no human results.

Design. Cell studies and guinea pig skin, testing carnosine with resveratrol in coated liposomes.
Finding. The authors report the best anti-ageing results at a 2:1 resveratrol-to-carnosine ratio in coated liposomes. This is a combination, not carnosine alone.

Design. Cell studies, 3D skin models and zebrafish, testing hydroxypinacolone retinoate with carnosine in nanoliposomes. Several co-authors are from companies.
Finding. Nanoliposome delivery increased skin retention of both compounds compared with the free combination. The study is about delivery and cells, not a human result.

Design. Clinical trial in 34 Asian participants over 56 days, of a serum with four ingredients including decarboxy carnosine. Cell and skin-model work is also reported. The abstract does not state whether there was a control group. All authors are from a cosmetics company.
Finding. After 56 days, skin lightness improved, facial sallowness (yellowness) fell, and skin autofluorescence, a marker of glycation, decreased. The carnosine part cannot be separated from the other three ingredients.
How it is used
Found in anti-ageing and brightening serums, often with other antioxidants. Decarboxy carnosine is a modified form used in some products.
The studies use different delivery systems, so a result from one product does not transfer to another.
Safety
The records checked for this page do not report safety results for carnosine alone on skin. The 2025 trial’s abstract does not mention side effects.
This page covers topical use only.
Talk to a doctor, dermatologist or pharmacist before starting a new active, especially if you are pregnant, have a skin condition, or use prescription treatments.
Questions
Is carnosine the same as decarboxy carnosine?
No. Decarboxy carnosine is a modified form. The 2025 trial tested it inside a four-ingredient serum, so its effect cannot be credited to carnosine alone.
Does carnosine lighten skin?
Lab and cell studies report melanin-lowering effects. One 2025 trial of a serum with decarboxy carnosine reported improved skin lightness, but it cannot tell which ingredient did it.
