What is tremella?
Tremella fuciformis, the snow or silver-ear mushroom, is an edible fungus long used in East Asian cooking. Its polysaccharides form a gel that holds a great deal of water.
What it does for skin
In skincare it is used as a humectant that helps the skin surface stay hydrated.
What the research shows
A 2021 study of a fermented Tremella polysaccharide found that one fraction retained moisture well in laboratory tests and increased the activity of moisture-related genes in human skin cells grown in the lab.
We found no controlled human trials of topical Tremella polysaccharide.
