Crossover trial

A crossover trial gives each participant both the treatment and the control, in random order, with a break between the two periods.

What it means

Each person acts as their own control, so the design can need fewer participants. Its main risk is carry-over, where the first treatment’s effects linger into the second period. A washout period helps reduce that risk.

Many small nutrition and supplement trials use this design.
