A plant polyphenol. A four-arm trial in women found a wrinkle benefit only when oral and topical resveratrol were combined. The trial was company-funded.

What is Resveratrol?

The trial studied trans-resveratrol, taken as a capsule and applied as a 1.5% cream.

What it does for skin

Total wrinkle score fell by 11.9% in the combined oral-plus-topical arm and by 6.3% in the placebo arm. Only the combined arm differed significantly from placebo (p < 0.05).

Oral resveratrol alone did not reduce wrinkles significantly more than placebo (−7.8% vs −6.3%).

What the research shows

The trial was randomized, blinded and placebo-controlled. Participants were otherwise healthy women aged 40 and over, with group mean ages from 55.8 to 59.3.

Two of the four arms showed a larger rise in U-zone sebum than placebo. Two arms showed a larger fall in pigmentation.

Two authors are employed by Lallemand Bio-Ingredients, which acquired Evolva AG. A third author was formerly employed by Evolva.

The authors list these limits: androgen levels, collagen and senescence markers were not measured, there was no younger control group, and the treatment period was short.

Forms, amounts and limits

The trial used 75 mg per capsule twice daily (150 mg a day) and a 1.5% cream applied twice daily, for 8 weeks.

These are trial amounts. The sources reviewed do not establish a skin dose for supplements.

Safety

Eleven adverse events occurred across the four arms, with 4, 3, 2 and 2 in the four groups. All were mild, and six led to withdrawal from the study.

The authors suggest that excipients in the cream or capsule bases were more likely contributors than the active compound itself.

Questions

Does oral resveratrol reduce wrinkles?

In this trial, oral resveratrol alone did not reduce wrinkles significantly more than placebo. Only the combined oral and topical arm did.

Does resveratrol protect against sun damage?

The trial did not measure sun protection. Its outcomes included wrinkles, pigmentation, sebum, pore size, hydration, elasticity and blood levels of resveratrol.
