What is Glutathione?

Glutathione is a small molecule made of three amino acids that helps protect cells from oxidative stress.

What it does for skin

In the trial, melanin was significantly lower than placebo at two sites: the right side of the face (p = 0.021) and the sun-exposed left forearm (p = 0.036).

The abstract names only these two sites and gives p-values only for them.

What the research shows

60 medical students were randomized, and all 60 completed the study.

Oral glutathione was given at 500 mg a day, split into two doses, for 4 weeks.

JSP Pharmaceuticals partly supported the study. The sponsors had no role in its design, conduct, analysis or manuscript preparation. The authors report no conflicts of interest.

Forms, amounts and limits

The trial used 500 mg a day, split into two doses, for 4 weeks.

Safety

The authors say long-term safety has not been established and warrants more extensive clinical trials.

Talk to a doctor or pharmacist before starting any supplement, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition or take medicines.
