Epidermis and dermis

The epidermis is the outer layer of skin, and the dermis is the thicker layer beneath it, which holds collagen, elastin and blood vessels.

What it means

The epidermis is made mostly of keratinocytes and is topped by the stratum corneum, the skin barrier. The dermis contains fibroblasts that make collagen and elastin, and most of the structural changes of aging happen there.

Topical products mostly act in the epidermis. Effects deeper in the dermis depend on how much of an ingredient gets through.
