Collagen Types · The basement membrane’s scaffold

Type IV collagen: the basement membrane.

Type IV belongs to the basement membrane that joins the epidermis to the dermis. The sources on it are fewer, and we say where they stop.

In short

  • A 2025 review says type IV collagen maintains the stability of the basement membrane.1
  • A laboratory skin-model study reports that the basement membrane has been reported to be damaged in sun-exposed skin, and that blocking matrix metalloproteinases increased type IV and VII collagen deposition at the junction in that model.2

01

What it does

The review of collagens in skin aging says type IV collagen maintains the stability of the basement membrane.1

The 2005 study describes the epidermal basement membrane as playing important roles in adhesion between epidermis and dermis, and in controlling epidermal differentiation.2

02

Sun exposure and the membrane

The same study notes the basement membrane has been reported to be damaged in sun-exposed skin, and that matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are believed to be involved.2

In a skin-equivalent model, made by culturing human keratinocytes on a collagen gel containing human fibroblasts, laminin 5 and type IV and VII collagens were produced but a basement membrane was rarely seen at the junction. Synthetic MMP inhibitors markedly increased their deposition and led to a continuous basement membrane.2

This is a dish model. The authors describe it as partially mimicking photoageing, and one author group is from a cosmetics company research centre.2

What we could not confirm

The gaps, stated plainly.

  • Whether a cream or ingredient can rebuild type IV collagen in a person’s skin. The only study we read is a laboratory model using synthetic enzyme inhibitors.
  • How much of the basement membrane change seen in sun-exposed skin is caused by MMPs in living people. The abstract says MMPs are believed to be involved.

Questions

Common questions.

Where is type IV collagen found in skin?

In the epidermal basement membrane, the layer between the epidermis and dermis. A 2025 review says it maintains the stability of that membrane.12

Does sun damage affect type IV collagen?

A 2005 laboratory study notes the basement membrane has been reported to be damaged in sun-exposed skin, and reports a skin model in which blocking MMPs increased type IV and VII collagen deposition. It is not a human trial.2
